An interview with Oskar Monkiewicz

Oskar is our Assistant Head of Loan Operations and Data Analytics Manager. Originally from Poland, he moved to the UK at the age of 15. He has a BSc in Management from the University of Manchester and a MSc in Management and Finance from the University of Chester. Oskar brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Solutus.

We’ve asked Oskar a few questions about himself and his role in Solutus, and crucially, how his background and skills assist him in completing that role.

Q: During your time at Solutus, what has changed in terms of your role and responsibilities?

A: I joined Solutus as a Loan Analyst which gave me my first experience of commercial loan servicing. I was lucky to have great mentors as well as training from more experienced colleagues that enabled me to learn the necessary skills and the opportunity to be promoted to Senior Loan Analyst. From there, I became more involved in guiding and training new team members and became administrator of our loan management system.

This paved the way for my current position as Assistant Head of Loan Operations and Data Analytics Manager, where I focus on strategic system enhancements. For example, automating statements and using data in a more intelligent way to understand and calculate fees, enables teams to save time on those crucial tasks, which can then be used more productively working on solutions for our clients.

Q: What had you done beforehand that led you to wanting to be part of this industry?

Previously I had been involved in both the e-commerce and the hospitality industry. During my time at university, I founded an e-commerce business which I operated for over six years, managing all facets of the business, including inventory management, marketing, distribution, and customer service. This gave me an insight into some aspects of management as well as finance, which I really enjoyed. I also worked on the renovation of a guest house in Poland which gave me a greater understanding of business.

These combined experiences have helped me understand that there are many parts of a business that have to work seamlessly together.

Q: Why did you choose to join Solutus?

A: I wanted to use my academic background in management and finance, with my practical experience, and Solutus presented itself as the perfect opportunity. I've always been drawn to the complexities and challenges that are inherent in this field.

Solutus offered that chance to both pursue that career, and passion, and stood out as an organisation that values innovation whilst offering unique opportunities that would perhaps be harder to come by in a large corporate. Its size allows for a more diverse and broadened experience, but that coupled with an open door policy, has enabled me to learn quickly and draw on the experience of others.

Q: What sets Solutus apart from others in the industry?

A: I believe that the culture of accessibility and openness ultimately means better results for our clients. It means that the teams collaborate well and can be innovative in their thinking, so traditional solutions are considered alongside innovate ones and it is often the combination of these that leads to the best results for our clients.
